Thoughts on Tech Diving
April 12th, 2005 by Michael Bear

Ahhh….the pains of finding a Tech Instructor!

After a bad experience last November with a TDI instructor who had us doing questionable things at very questionable depths, my dive buddy Dave and I have begun the long trek of finding an instructor who won’t empty our bank accounts OR send us prematurely to Davey Jones’ locker!

Stay tuned!

    Mike,

I assume from your comments on DIR that you are not willing to go the GUE Tech route. May I suggest you consider NAUI Tech? They have a much better/safer program than TDI and have active instructors in town, notably Lonnie Sharp at http://www.ibdivers.com. I believe NAUI Tech is using some elements DIR equipment config now (backplate, longhose, etc.), but is not as strict on equipment or procedure as GUE. I am hearing good things about NAUI Tech from DIR and non-DIR folks alike. You might talk to Josh Woods about his experience if you haven’t already. Honestly, I wouldn’t let my loved ones train with any TDI instructor I have met yet.

Especially if you plan on going overseas, ANDI is very well respected. They also have some of the best schools.
Tech diving originated in the cold, deep, waters of the NE, and ANDI was the progenitor of much of what is now tech. I’d highly recommend choosing an ANDI tech course.
Overall, ANDI focus on good science, proper training, and what works, allowing you to use the set-up that works best for you and your buddy, as long as it meets their rigorous equipment standards. (Which tends to mean OMS.)
