I think 2013 should be the year we lay to rest the ‘100 million sharks killed each year’ figure–even though good intentions were behind the use of this number, it is *no where near* being scientifically accurate–see Dr. Shelley Clarke’s article on the misuse of this number.

“The US Coast Guard said it found hundreds of dead sharks, likely caught for their fins, in an illegal net off the coast of Texas. 

The so-called gill net stretched for five miles and contained 345 shark carcasses: 225 black tip, 109 bonnet and 11 bull sharks, the coast guard said in a news release Wednesday.”

The Cook Islands establishes a 1.9-million-sq-km shark sanctuary, shortly after neighbouring French Polynesia – together creating the world’s largest.

Greg Harris, founder of the NW Shark Preservation Society [http://nwsps.com/], is a undergraduate student at Washington State University.

 

He is currently involved in a shark tagging project in Willapa Bay, WA. His goal is to determine the number, range and breeding patterns of the Sevengill Shark (Notorynchus cepedianus).
